negotiating the night

NEGOTIATING THE NIGHT

When I was young on the Missouri farm
I must have had cat eyes.
When we blew out the kerosene lamp
it was feel your way dark.
Unless the moon was shining
through the windows.

Now I navigate the house at night
by the lights on the electronic equipment.
Don’t want to stumble and fall.
All the red, blue, yellow,
green and opaque lights,
some blink others just stare.
Makes it look like a little Broadway.
